Annie Lauterbach

My first experience with clay was in 3rd grade. Clay was prepared by the custodian and delivered to our classroom in a big garbage can. Our assignment was to build a coil pot inspired by our study of Native American Cultures. I still have that pot! It was so exciting for my 8-year-old heart!

My current work is functional stoneware pottery and clay whistles. Crafting a mug, bowl or plate that is well-balanced and a joy to use is very satisfying. I have always found great solace in the natural world; I come from a long line of nature lovers and gardeners. Many of my pots are painted with images of birds, animals and plants that I come across while walking in the woods, gardening or paddling. Wax-resist is a glaze technique that fascinates me as well.

Being part of Brattleboro Clayworks has been a way to build connections to the community, which deeply enriches my life.
