Karen Horton

I have returned to making pottery after a long career teaching music in public school and performing classical music on the french horn (I am a long time member of Brattleboro’s local orchestra). I developed a passion for clay and the potter’s wheel back in 1978 at the Frog Hollow Craft Center in Middlebury, Vermont, and at Wesleyan Potters in Middletown, Connecticut during the early 90s. Finding the clay community at the Brattleboro Clayworks has been the perfect fit for me, now that I have time in my retirement.

I love to grow vegetables and love to cook, so I often have a recipe in mind when I create a new form. I often include the recipe in the sale or gift of my pots. I am also passionate about reducing the use of plastic, so I make crocks for making yogurt and dispensers for olive oil for storing oil bought in bulk, as well as many other functional forms.

All my experience is in high fire stoneware. I use brown stoneware and love to explore earthy colored glazes and decoration techniques. I am inspired by the natural beauty of my neighborhood in the mountains and lake near my home in Wilmington,VT.
